As a psychotherapist, I am affirmative of consensual relationships, whether they are poly or monogamous, kinky or vanilla, queer or straight.
Often, people in non-traditional sexual relationships — such as polyamory, ethical nonmonogamy, or BDSM — can feel marginalized or experience shame due to the culture we live in. Family or friends may judge — from lack of understanding or religious doctrine — if you have more than one partner, if your primary partner is married to someone else, or if you participate in power exchange or consensual kink. You may fear being outed or ostracized in your community.
You may struggle with jealousy, possessiveness, or envy if you are sharing a partner with others. You might feel shame if you have a kink or fetish that isn’t in alignment with cultural norms or traditional gender roles. You may be experiencing the isolation of being with a partner who is not able or willing to understand your desires or support you in exploring them.
My goal is to support you in finding fulfillment in your human connections in a culture that may be unsupportive of the kind of love or relationship dynamics that you find most fulfilling. I can help you to work through your emotions as well as to develop better communication skills. Many relationship struggles arise from poor communication, and this can be amplified in relationships with multiple partners.
Talking to a psychotherapist can also help you to process struggles with how you are perceived — or fear you will be perceived — as well as deal with judgment or ostracism. If you are feeling shame, I can help you come to a place of positive self-acceptance about your sexuality or relationship choices, by challenging traditional cultural teachings about what is the “right” kind of relationship or how you “should” engage with other people. What matters most is that you are being ethical, open in your communication, and honoring the boundaries of your partner(s) and yourself.
I have professional training in sex therapy and issues around gender and kink, and am grounded in an ethos of support and affirmation.
